Improving Passenger Safety on Your Boat

Life preserver

Everyone is going to want to get out and enjoy the spring weather. If you’re a boat owner, you might want to invite friends or family on your vessel. Taking your boat out is often a great way to socialize, relax and make the most of this unique recreational item.

Nevertheless, having guests on your boat comes with the chance for problems. Someone might get hurt, lose their property or experience other harm by coming aboard. The resulting damage might be your fault. Everyone wants to keep their guests safe on their boats. Keep these tips in mind to help you do so.

1. Get Boat Insurance

No boater should go without strong, comprehensive boat insurance. Your policy often provides coverage for both you and your guests. There are a couple of unique types of coverage that might specifically help guests:

  • If a guest pilots your boat with your permission, they might cause accidents or other damages. Guest passenger liability coverage can help that person cover their legal expenses.
  • Medical payments coverage can help boaters cover their own and their guests' medical needs.

Other elements of your insurance policy can provide for passenger needs as well. However, every policy is different. Contact your insurance agent to learn more about passenger protection in your policy.

2. Follow All Safety Laws

The rules of the water are almost as stringent as the rules of the road. Like you have to protect passengers in your car, you also have to protect guests on your boat. Failing to protect guests could mean you put them in harm’s way, not to mention break the law.

Ensure that your guests always know the safety features of your vessel. They should understand areas of the vessel to avoid and how to embark and disembark safely. Explain emergency procedures so they know how to react in the event of an emergency. Most importantly, enforce safety gear requirements at all times. For example, most guests need life jackets for the duration of excursions.

3. Monitor Your Guests at All Times

You shouldn’t have to police your guests. However, you assume responsibility for their safety. Keep your eye on them at all times. Don’t be afraid to enforce safety requirements. If your guests are playing, cooking or consuming alcohol, make sure they do so safety. Offer them help as needed.

The more attention you pay to your guests, the safer they can stay while you boat. Let your Baton Rouge boat insurance step in when unforeseen accidents occur. The right policy might prove a great benefit.
